The Diocese of Kandy
A Church Shaped by Hills, History, and Mission
“The Diocese of Kandy is not only a place on the map; it is a memory of faith that learned to survive, serve, and witness in the heart of Sri Lanka.”
Set among the ridges and valleys of Sri Lanka’s Central Province, the Diocese of Kandy is often described in geographic terms—Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, tea estates, migrant communities, ancient cities, and modern towns. Yet its deeper identity is spiritual and historical: this is the Church that learned to live as a small flock amid powerful kingdoms, colonial transitions, linguistic diversity, and a vibrant Buddhist culture; the Church that learned to serve quietly, educate generously, and witness patiently. Ecclesiastically, Kandy is a suffragan diocese of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Colombo. It was first erected as the Apostolic Vicariate of Kandy (1883) and then raised to the Diocese of Kandy (1886), with St. Anthony’s Cathedral as its episcopal seat.
From Apostolic Memory to Mission in the Hills
Sri Lankan Christian tradition preserves an apostolic memory linked to St. Thomas the Apostle and to early Indian Ocean trade routes. Archaeological signs such as the Anuradhapura Cross attest to early Christian presence on the island.
During Dutch persecution, Kandy became a providential refuge. From here, St. Joseph Vaz restored Catholic life through clandestine ministry, catechesis, pastoral mobility, and heroic charity. He died in Kandy in 1711.
“Kandy remembers St. Joseph Vaz not as a conqueror, but as a servant who walked the hills with the Gospel.”
The Apostolic Vicariate of Kandy was established in 1883 and elevated to a diocese in 1886, marking the maturity of the hill-country Church.
Bishops, Religious, and Mission
The identity of the Diocese of Kandy has been shaped by the pastoral vision of its bishops, particularly the early Sylvestro-Benedictine shepherds who emphasized prayer, education, and stability, followed by Sri Lankan bishops who guided the diocese through modern pastoral challenges.
